Frequently Asked Questions

The Basics of MLD

What exactly is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a highly specialised, gentle massage technique. Its primary purpose is to encourage the natural movement of lymph fluid around the body. This helps to reduce swelling, remove waste products from your tissues, and support your immune system. Unlike a traditional massage, it uses very light, rhythmic pressure to target the lymphatic system, which lies just beneath the skin.

What are the main benefits of MLD?

The benefits are wide-ranging and can be tailored to your specific needs. Clients often seek MLD for:

  • Reducing Swelling: Highly effective for post-surgery recovery, fluid retention, and managing conditions like lymphedema.

  • Detoxification: Helps flush metabolic waste and toxins, reducing feelings of sluggishness.

  • Aesthetic Sculpting: Minimises bloating and water retention for a more defined look, especially in the stomach, arms, and legs.

  • Immune Support: Can help boost your immune system, particularly after illness.

  • Relaxation: The gentle, rhythmic nature of the treatment is deeply relaxing and can soothe the nervous system.

How is MLD different from a deep tissue or sports massage?

The purpose and pressure are completely different. A deep tissue or sports massage uses firm pressure to target muscle knots and tension. MLD uses exceptionally light, skin-stretching movements. The goal of MLD is not to work the muscles, but to stimulate the delicate network of lymph vessels just below the skin's surface.

Your Session & What to Expect

What does an MLD treatment feel like? Is it painful?

MLD should never be painful. The touch is feather-light, gentle, and rhythmic. Most clients find the treatment incredibly soothing and deeply relaxing, with many falling asleep during their session.

I’ve had cosmetic surgery. When is it safe to have MLD?

MLD is a key part of post-operative care for many cosmetic procedures. While you should always follow the specific advice of your surgeon, MLD can often begin within days of your surgery to manage swelling and accelerate healing. Please contact us to discuss your specific procedure.

How should I prepare for my appointment?

There is very little you need to do. We recommend being well-hydrated by drinking some water beforehand and avoiding a heavy meal in the hour before your session. Just come ready to relax.

(Question)

Do I need a referral from my GP?

For general wellness or aesthetic treatments, a GP referral is not required. However, if you are seeking MLD for a specific medical condition (such as lymphedema or post-surgical recovery), we always recommend you discuss it with your GP or specialist first.

Aftercare & Results

What should I do after my MLD session?

To maximise the benefits of your treatment, we advise you to:

  • Drink plenty of water to help flush the toxins.

  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol for the rest of the day.

  • Take it easy and allow your body to rest if you feel tired.

  • You may notice an increase in urination, which is a positive sign that the lymphatic system is working effectively.

How many sessions will I need to see results?

This depends entirely on your reason for coming. For general wellness or de-bloating before an event, a single session can produce noticeable results. For post-surgical recovery or managing a chronic condition, a course of treatments is usually recommended. We will discuss a personalised treatment plan with you during your first appointment.
